History
In 1942 de Havilland installed a pair of Merlin 61s to a Mosquito Mk IV. Rated for 1,680 hp and equipped with a two-stage supercharger and four-bladed props, the Mosquito reached an altitude of 40,000 feet and a top speed of 432 mph, 52 mph faster than the production Mk IVs.
This more powerful model was designated the Mk IX and series production commenced using the Merlin 72 engine and three-bladed props, the four-bladed versions having been found to cause engine surging. The Mk IX also sported the "universal" wing, which was originally designed for the aborted Mk V model. The "universal" wing was stressed to carry either a pair of 50-gallon drop tanks or a pair of 500 lb. bombs, which gave the plane a total bomb load of 3,000 lbs. A total of fifty-four Mk IX bombers were built.
