Strengths
Firepower: The four 20mm cannon concentrated in the nose give the FB Mk VI a terrific anti-air or anti-tank punch.
Ground Attack: Combined with the forward guns, the Mossie can carry two 500 lb. bombs and eight 60 lb. rockets.
Agility: The Mosquito handles and performs so well, it is easy to forget you are flying a bomber.
Weaknesses
Defense: Without defensive guns, the Mosquito must rely on its speed to evade enemy planes.
History
In July 1941 the RAF asked deHavilland about the possibility of building a Mosquito that combined the heavy armament of the Mk II night-fighter and as much of the bomb-load of the Mk IV bomber as possible.
Known as the FB Mk VI, the Mosquito fighter-bomber was equipped with the same four .303 machine-gun and four 20mm Hispano cannon forward firing armament as on the Mk II. The cannon installation occupied the forward half of the bomb bay, allowing the plane to carry two 250 lb. or 500 lb. bombs in the remaining half.
The first FB Mk VI made its maiden flight during February of 1943 and production soon commenced. The FB Mk VI was the most produced variant of the Mosquito with nearly a third of all Mossies being FB Mk VIs.
Soon after its introduction experiments were made with installing rocket rails on the undersides of the wings. These proved successful and soon all Mk VIs were converted to carry rockets as well as its full complement of bombs and guns.
