Introduction

Here is your chance to personalize your FA install by using any of our Audio Skins, create new sound clips from scratch or mix and match. Simply download any of the below zip files and unzip the archive into your Fighter Ace folder and you are ready to go. The sound files are located in the SOUNDS directory. You can use Audacity to edit sounds to your liking.

Offline Voice Overs

File Name Deciphering

The filenames used for these sounds are not very user friendly but with a little help you should get the hang of it and listening to the clip will also reveal what it is about.

Engine sounds (note that these are engine sounds and not plane sounds) start with "En" and are followed by what type A (Air Cooled), W (Water Cooled), J (Jet), R (Rocket) and what part of the loop sound it is.

The HCanElev name is a bit obtuse to understand and it "simply" means that it is the "Cannon Hit Elevator" sound.

You may want to rename filenames so that they are more intuitive by editing the Sounds.str file and then each .snd file. As long as all filenames exist and resolve on your local Fighter Ace directory file system this will work, note however that the client will crash if it is not 100% correct.

Audio Format

The audio format can be many things but should be kept at 22050 Hz PCM dry mono due to the fact that all sounds are positioned in 3D space and effects are handled by the audio subsystem of DirectX.

Making the sounds too long and/or bumping the sample rate may cause micro freezes or lost connection if you are not careful. Be aware that others that will be using your Audio Skin, if you choose to share it, may not get it to work optimally for their audio card or speaker setup.

Dealing with problems

If you don't like or don't want the new sound scheme, follow these simple steps to revert back to the old sounds.

  • 1. Navigate to your FA directory (it should be in C:\Program Files\Fighter Ace)
  • 2. Right click in the directory and choose "NEW" and "Folder".
  • 3. Name this folder SOUNDS.
  • 4. Download the "Original All-round Sounds" from the "Audio Skins" section above.
  • 5. Open the OriginalDefault.zip folder and place all files contained into the SOUNDS folder in your FA directory.
  • 6. Restart Fighter Ace and you are done!
