Overview
Fighter Ace Campaign II is a "Best of Seven" series of battles between the Allied and Axis teams, starting on 11 April 2007. Battles will be held every other weekend until a winner is decided.
The campaign will be fought under the Fighter Ace Campaign II Rules.
Schedule
The battles will alternate between Friday night, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. The reason for the different start times and days is that it gives a chance for each major time zone to have one battle in a good time for them to play. The battles and their dates are:
- Battle 1: Friday, 11 May 2007 at 9:30 pm US ET - Flying Tigers (2/42)
- Battle 2: Saturday, 26 May 2007 at 5:30 pm US ET - Stalingrad (12/42)
- Battle 3: Sunday, 10 June 2007 at 3 pm US ET - Kasserine Pass (2/43)
- Battle 4: Friday, 29 June 2007 at 9:30 pm US ET - Lae (9/43)
- Battle 5: Saturday, 28 July 2007 at 5:30 pm US ET - Ranger Up North (10/43)
- Battle 6: Sunday, 19 August 2007 at 3 pm US ET - Trapped In Transylvania (8/44)
The rooms will open with the Fly button disabled 15 minutes prior to the start times above so that teams can get into the room and get coordinated before the battle begins.
The details for each battle will be jointly determined by the two Command Staffs and will be posted here when available. Please ensure that you are signed up with one of the two Command Staffs so that you can be part of the team's overall battle plan.
Battle 1 - Flying Tigers
In February 1942 the Japanese turned their attention to the oil-rich British colony of Burma and began advancing toward Rangoon. The British RAF and Chinese air force, including the American Volunteer Group, mustered their strength to help defend against the new Japanese attack.
Battle Configuration
The white arrows indicate the direction of scripted Japanese tank columns (8x Type 97s). Once a column captures its target airfield, another column will spawn to attack the next airfield in line. Tank columns will continue to respawn until they capture their targets.
The black arrows indicate the direction of a scripted British counterattack (8x Type 97s), which will be launched from 33d whenever the first Allied inner ring airfield is captured (one of the four airfields east and south of the target). Tank columns will continue to respawn until they capture their targets. At the same time the tanks spawn a new GB base will become available in the middle section of the map.
The US (yellow) scenes are friendly to GB and GB planes can land there for repairs. However, no planes can spawn from these bases until captured by a tank column.
Victory Conditions
The winner is the team that owns the rear GB BBB near 18o at the end of the 3 hours of the game's duration.

Battle Configuration
The four scenes inside the black circle are the target scenes inside the city center. Each team has a column of 8 tanks (Panthers or T-34s), which are set to assault each scene inside the city center.
Every twenty minutes a pair of cargo ships travels the course of the white arrow. The ships will sail to the two southern scenes, one each, and will land a group of 8 T-34s nearby if they get to within 2 km of their targets.
Victory Conditions
SU wins if they own two of the four scenes inside the black circle at the end of 3 hours of combat. GE wins if they control 3 or 4 of the scenes.

Campaign Progression
The Allied victory ties the campaign score at 1-1, meaning that a 5th battle will be necessary.
The next battle is Kasserine Pass, February 1943.
Battle 3 - Kasserine Pass
After the easy landings in French North Africa, the American Army faces the Wehrmacht for the first time since 1918. The Afrika Korps is advancing north from Kasserine in three columns. Can the Allies hold the crucial passes through the Dorsal Mountains?
Schedule
The battle will be held on 10 June 2007 at 3:00 pm US ET. Register for the battle on the Kasserine Pass Signup page. Registration is required for Awards eligibility.
Battle Configuration
The coordinates of the three target scenes are listed on the map, to the right of each scene.
The three airfields adjacent to the target scenes are ENEMY to both teams. This is primarily to prevent use of those fields, but also represents the tendancy of ground troops of either side to fire at anything in the air, assuming it is enemy, at this stage of the war.
Each team has two tank columns that attack each target scene. Tank columns consist of 15 tanks. Tank types are randomly selected, either Cromwells or Shermans for the Allies, or Cromwells or Tigers for the Axis team.
The location of tanks on the map represents the starting locations when the room launches. When a tank column is destroyed, it will respawn at the airfield, where the rear-most column starts.
If either team owns all three target scenes at the same time, paratroops will be enabled, allowing up to 50 per team. Regradless of scene ownership, each team will get up to 50 paratroopers when there is 45 minutes remaining in the battle.
Victory Conditions
The winner is the team that owns at least 2 of the 3 target scenes at the end of the battle (after 3 hours play).

- If balancing is needed teams will be given extra forward airfields to the left of the western target scene and, if significant balancing, is needed additional airfields will have their ownership changed.
Battle Results
The battle was a close-fought, see-saw affair. The western and central target scenes changed hands a few times, but the real battle was over the eastern target scene. The US team made a flanking maneuver to begin the game, capturing GE's rear airbases on the east side, but GE came back and recaptured them, while simultaneously pressuring the center by capturing the GB base north of the central target.
During the final battle the fight for the eastern target scene was hot and furious, with the scene changing hands several times. With 10 minutes left, it looked like a US victory, but GE tanks arrived and captured the scene with 5 minutes left. US tanks were rolling and closing in, but arrived 5 minutes after the battle was over.
The result was an Axis victory.

Campaign Progression
The Axis victory gives them a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven campaign.
Battle 4 - Lae
Aussie troops are converging on the Japanese airfield complex at Lae, on the north coast of Papua, New Guinea. Can the Japanese hold them off and retain control of the critical airfield at Lae?
Schedule
The Lae battle will be held on 29 June 2007 at 9:30 pm US ET.

Battle Configuration
Clustered scenes will be grouped so that capturing the key scene captures the group. The key scene in any cluster is the airfield and, if there is no airfield, the factory.
The purple (GE) area represents JP forces on New Britain and is not capturable (each scene has endless defensive KV1s). Original GB scenes are likewise protected to prevent capture.
The red (SU) area is neutral enemy to both teams, so that GB cannot be easily attacked on their flank. These scenes are protected with endless tanks, like those in the GB and GE areas.
The white line indicates a column of cargo ships, with escorts, that will sail until they reach land. As long as the cargo ships exist at their destination, a tank column will launch on shore and drive west to the BBB (Busu).
The black lines indicate possible tank attacks of Type 97s, representing troop concentrations. If GB owns the the scene at the base of one or more black arrows, tank groups will attack along the paths of the black arrows. Those tanks will respawn as long as the central base is GB.
Each team gets paratroops, though JP is very limited in the number of planes they will have for carrying troops, while GB is limited only in the total number of troops available at any one time (60).
JP gets 15 columns of defensive tanks (Type97s), which will spawn in response to defensive triggers. Defensive Triggers are set below the Capture level (D=25,C=30,A=100). Scene damage would need to be brought to 100 to get an offensive trigger for the JP tanks (almost impossible in normal play). GB has no tanks that will respond to triggers, but GB launches tank attacks by capturing key scenes.
Victory Conditions
GB must own Lae (108as) and either Salamaua (98bb) or Finschafen (95w) at the end of three hours of play to win.
Note that if Axis significantly outnumbers Allies and the three Commands agree, the victory requirements will be reduced to only needing to own Lae (108as) to win. If the Allied team significantly outnumbers Axis, the victory requirements will be increased to requiring all three scenes for an Allied victory.

Battle Results
The Allied team pushed forward from the beginning of the battle, slowing pushing the Axis line back toward the Lae area. However, this came at the expense of providing air cover for the Busu invasion fleet, and the Axis team had eliminaed the cargo ships before they passed Salamaua.
Meanwhile, the Allies continued to push ahead on the ground, capturing Salamaua when the battle was about half over, and putting them within 25 miles of their final objective. The airborne forces were used to capture Malolo, which was able to launch several tank groups toward Lae before the Axis forces swarmed back over it and retook the critical trail juncture.
As the time left in the battle wound down an all-out push for Lae was called for Allied Command, but at the same time Axis Command was organizing their final defenses. The two forces clashed in furious air battles over Lae and the air approaches from Salamaua, with each side dropping troops over Lae to ensure their control over the victory scene.
The Allied forces had troops on the ground, but still had failed to destroy defending tanks and troops, and still short of the capture level, when the battle ended. Each team put forth an incredible effort and the battle was down to the wire, but the Axis team held onto Lae and thus won the battle.

Campaign Progression
With this victory, the Axis team takes a 3-1 lead in victories and is only one win shy of winning the Campaign. The next battle is Ranger Up North and it will be fought on Saturday, 28 July 2007 at 5:30 pm US ET.
Battle 5 - Ranger Up North
Historically, the USS Ranger made a hit-n-run carrier raid on 4 October 1943 against German installations along the Norwegian coast, with the only opposition being AA. This was a surprise for the Germans because they had already decorated U-404 captain Otto von Bülow in April 1943 for sinking her.
The premise of our battle is that the Ranger raid was expanded into a seek-and-destroy mission against the Tirpitz, which was hidden somewhere in Norwegian waters. Simultaneously the Germans have learned of the Ranger's escape and have set a trap for her using the Tirpitz and additional merchant shipping as bait, with crack, front-line Luftwaffe air units secretly flown into the area to sink the Ranger once and for all to preserve German pride.
Schedule
Ranger Up North will be fought on Saturday, 28 July 2007 at 5:30 pm US ET.
Registration
Registration is not required to play, but it helps us to know how many players are planning on attending and allows the Command Staffs to generate specific plans using specific players. As a reward to those who take the time to let us know they plan on playing, only those who register before the battle are eligible to receive event awards/ribbons.

Battle Configuration
The GE team has 4x groups of 7x cargo ships each sailing near the Norwegian coast (north of 72 line or west of the CF line). Each cargo ship group serves as a trigger for revealing a group of 3x battleships "behind" the cargo ship screen. Once all six cargo ships are sunk, the associated battleship group will spawn. The battleships are stationary and probably parked near ground targets for AA protection.
One of the GE battleship groups is predesignated by the Axis Commaned to be the "Tirpitz" group. Sinking all 3 battleships is considered sinking the Tirpitz.
The US team has 4x groups of 6x carriers escorted by a group of 6x cruisers, which can sail in the area between the 80 and 100 lines or east of the CR line.
One of the carrier groups is predesignated by the Allied Command to be the "Ranger" group. Sinking all 6 carriers is considered sinking the Ranger.
Only Lancasters may launch from the SU base.
Victory Conditions
Victory is determined as follows:
1. If team A sinks their primary target and team B doesn't, team A wins. If both fail or both succeed, check #2.
2. The team with the most target groups sunk of the primary type is the winner (battleships or carriers). The entire group must be sunk to qualify. If both teams sink the same number of groups of the primary target type, check #3.
3. The team with the most enemy ship groups sunk is the winner. If both team sink the same number of groups, check #4.
4. Each team's Bomber Score is divided by 100,000 with normal rounding (5 up, 4 down) and the team with the highest number wins. If both teams have the same number, the battle is a draw.

Battle Results
Each team struck quickly, with the first cargo ships and carriers located within 10 minutes of the start of the battle. From there the battle turned into a slugfest as the Axis team sent waves of bombers after the carriers in the east, while the RAF mounted massive raids against the cargo ships in the west.
The first carrier group was dispatched by Luftwaffe pilots within the first hour of the battle, and the Ranger group in the far east was located and damaged, but it evaded further attacks as the USN pilots worked feverishly to defend their homes. Waves of Hellcats and Corsairs met the attacking Dorniers and Junkers bombers and the battle in the east raged throughout the 3 hours of the contest, but in the end the Ranger group was sunk, with its last carrier sinking beneath the waves with only a minute left in the battle.
This literally last-minute success gave the Axis team the victory in the battle on the first condition, leaving no doubt about the outcome and giving the Axis team the victory in the Campaign with 4 battles won and only 1 lost.
Campaign Progression
The victory in Ranger Up North gives the Axis team the victory in the Fighter Ace Campaign II. Those pilots who flew exclusively for the Axis team will be eligible for the victory device on their Campaign ribbons. Look for the Campaign ribbons to be awarded in the September Newsletter.
