History
Soviet civil airlines were already using a license-built variant of the DC-3 when the war started and these were immediately pressed into military service. The Lisunov company was assigned the task of producing a purpose-built military variant.
The Li-2, as it was called, was powered by a pair or Shvetsov M-62 engines, which were license-built copies of the Wright R-1820 Cyclone. Several changes to the original design were readily apparent. Unlike the original, the Li-2 was given some defensive armament in the form of a manually-operated dorsal gun turret equipped with a single 12.7mm machine gun. The cargo door was moved forward and a pair of gun positions were placed in the beam behind the cargo door, each equipped with a single 7.62mm machine gun.
Bomb racks enabled the Li-2 to carry up to 500 kg of bombs, while still capable of carrying a full load of 26 fully laden paratroopers (limited in game to 13) or 2000 kg of cargo. The additional weight of the defensive armament and heavier construction resulted in poorer overall performance than the original C-47.
